NOON began as a hobby and labor of love in Jane Palmer’s garage in the Beachwood Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles in 2010. She had recently moved a small dye machine across the country from Chicago and set it up in her garage.

Quickly word spread that she had a dye machine and knowledge of natural dyes, and Jane began using her expertise as a service for other designers.

In 2012, the business moved into an airy, light filled space in the heart of the garment district of downtown Los Angeles and became the premiere commercial scale natural dye house in the US.

Up until the end of 2015, NOON did all of its natural dyeing service work in-house, using carefully modified-for-natural-dye equipment, or by hand in one of our several indigo vats. The dyes used were made from plants, including roots, bark, wood, flowers and leaves and two insects. The heart of the practice was a simultaneous nod towards the past and a look towards the future. We used many recipes that were developed as long ago as the 1500s in Europe, including our recipe for true black. We loved tried and true techniques and dyes and working with farmers all over the world who have farmed dyes and land for generations.

We also have a strong mission to advance the technology of natural dyes, as well as reduce resources to grown them, and make them into a viable alternative to chemical based dyes.

Currently, we have stopped service dyeing for other brands to focus full time on a better natural dye solution. We are working with a National Science Foundation grant and Dr. Nina Shapley at Rutgers University to develop our new technology.
